Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 11, 2026

Hyphen helps separated parents raise their children together. Because that means handling sensitive family information, privacy is built into the product — not bolted on. This policy explains, in plain language, what we collect, why, and the control you keep over it.

1. Who we are

Hyphen ("Hyphen", "we", "us") is the data controller for the personal data processed through the Hyphen mobile app and this website. You can reach us at [email protected].

2. Data we collect

We collect only what the app needs to work. We do not sell your data, and we do not use advertising or third-party tracking SDKs.

CategoryExamplesWhy
AccountEmail address, display nameSign-in (passwordless, by one-time email code) and identifying you to your co-parent
Household & childrenFamily name, children's first name, date of birth, and any details you add (school, health notes, emergency contacts)To provide the calendar, profiles and shared organization features
Content you createMessages, expenses and receipts, documents, photos, journal entries, calendar events, handover notes, shared decisionsTo store and sync them between the two homes
LocationA child device's position — only in the optional "child device" mode (see §5)To let parents see where a child is, when they have set it up
SubscriptionSubscription status (via the App Store / RevenueCat)To unlock and manage Hyphen Pro features
TechnicalDevice push token, app language, basic diagnosticsNotifications, localization, reliability

Some of this is sensitive data (information about children, and potentially health details you choose to add). We process it because it is necessary to provide a service you have explicitly asked for, and on the basis of your consent where required by law.

3. How we use your data

We never use the content of your messages, expenses or documents for advertising or profiling.

4. AI message assistance

When you write a message that may come across as heated, Hyphen can suggest a calmer rewording before you send it. To do this, the message text is processed on our server by our AI provider (Anthropic). This processing is used solely to generate the suggestion in real time; the suggestion is optional, it never blocks you from sending your message, and the meaning of your message is preserved. Message content sent for this purpose is not used to train third-party models.

5. Children's data & location

Hyphen is intended for use by parents and legal guardians, not by children. Information about a child is entered by the parent.

Child location is handled through a dedicated, opt-in "child device" mode: a parent installs Hyphen on a child's secondary phone and pairs it using a 6-digit code generated from the parent's own account. Once paired:

No location is ever collected outside this explicit pairing.

6. Sharing within a household

Hyphen is, by design, shared between two co-parents. Information you add to a household (events, messages, expenses, children's details, etc.) is visible to the other parent and to any guardian you invite. Strict database access rules ensure a household's data is only ever visible to its own members.

7. Service providers

We rely on a small number of trusted providers who process data on our behalf, under contract:

8. Storage & security

Your data is stored on servers located in the European Union (Frankfurt, Germany). Connections are encrypted in transit, access is protected by per-household security rules, and authentication tokens are stored in the device's secure keychain. No method of transmission or storage is ever 100% secure, but we take reasonable, industry-standard measures to protect your information.

9. Retention & deletion

We keep your data for as long as your account is active. You can delete individual items (messages aside, where retention serves both parents) at any time in the app. You can request deletion of your account and associated personal data by contacting us at [email protected]; we will action it within the timeframe required by applicable law. Note that information shared in a household may be retained for the other parent where it forms part of a shared record.

10. Your rights

Depending on where you live (including under the EU/UK GDPR), you have the right to access, correct, export, restrict or delete your personal data, and to object to certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. When we make material changes, we will update the date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
